Titre du document: Document title:Exploring the factors that push young women into sex work in Northern Thailand
Description:
Or a critical appraisal of policy responses - This dissertation sketches a picture of the commercial sex industry in Thailand and explores the push factors that determine a woman's entry into the industry. Tracing the supply of women leads to a focus on rural life in the North, and requires an understanding of how Thailand's development strategy has increased the rural-urban divide, thus increasing levels of migration to the city and demand for jobs.

A dissertation submitted towards the degree of BA at the University of East Anglia.

Titre du document: Document title:Focusing on the Clients of Street Prostitutes: A Creative Approach to Reducing Violence Against Women - Final Report
Description:
The vast majority of those arrested for prostitution are women, with only about 10% of arrests consisting of clients, virtually all of whom are men, a situation that has been decried as unfair and discriminatory. Additionally, arresting prostitutes has proven largely ineffective, with many compelled to continue their activities because of dire economic circumstances, drug addiction, and/or fear of violence from a partner or pimp.

While earlier studies estimated that 69% or more men had patronized prostitutes during their lives, recent methodologically sound research provides a very different picture. The National Health and Social Life Survey, conducted in 1992 using a nationally representative sample, found that only about 16% of men in the U.S. had ever visited a prostitute, and that only about 6 % of men in the U.S visit prostitutes each year.

Titre du document: Document title:For Love or Money : Pimps and the Management of Sex Work
Description:
Based on interviews conducted in four cities in the UK, this study aims to enhance existing information about pimping and the management of sex workers. It finds that the minority of sex workers who are under a pimp's control are often subject to emotional and physical abuse. The authors note the success of specialized vice squads, including their ability to gain sex workers' trust and thus their testimony against pimps. They cite the need to police both street and indoor sex work with the goal of minimizing the number of women trafficked into prostitution. In addition, since most pimps are exposed to crime during their teenage years, they recommend early intervention to limit the spread of "pimping careers".

Titre du document: Document title:Globalized Female Slavery
Description:
The lack of outrage against sex slavery and the global system of prostitution is deafening. Laws are inadequate, few traffickers are investigated, and a pitiful number of convictions ensue. A mild slap on the wrist is often the harshest penalty, sending very encouraging messages to those men poised to enter the lucrative market. Traffickers are linked to sophisticated, professionally organized criminal networks worldwide, involving immigration and government officials where kickbacks are many: sexual favors, money or, at the very least, a simple strengthening of the system of male sexual exploitation of women.

Titre du document: Document title:The Internet and sex industries : partners in global sexual exploitation
Description:
As a part of globalization, women and children are increasingly becoming commodities to be bought, sold, and consumed by organized crime rings, tourists, military personnel, and men seeking sexual entertainment or non-threatening marriage partners. Through financial and technological interdependence, the sex industry and the Internet industry have become partners in the global sexual exploitation of women and children. Those with power are using new information technologies to expand their capacity to exploit women and girls throughout the world.
