Lap dancing has increasingly caught public attention during the last five years. Opinion is divided as to whether or not the activities in the clubs are part of the sex industry or the leisure industry. Within the industry there is evidence of denial that lap dancing is linked to the sex industry. None of the club owners or customers interviewed defined the clubs as part of the sex industry. Lap dancing has been described as 'the fastest growing area in Britain's sex industry. This study seeks to address lap dancing, and lap-dancing clubs, in a context of growing concerns from Glasgow City council regarding the current licensing system and lack of local authority powers. This study concludes the following : lap dancing clubs, contrary to the opinion of club owners interviewed for the purposes of this study, are part of the sex industry , and lap dancing is becoming increasingly normalised. |
