 The current financial crisis is a global phenomenon with impact varying by region, country, and locality. The crisis and its effects on human trafficking also vary by location and it has had a profound effect on the ability as individuals, organizations and governments to prevent and combat the scourge. According to the United Nations, human trafficking is now the third most lucrative criminal enterprise in the world (after weapons and narcotics). The crisis has likely made the poor more desperate and more willing to take risks that leave them vulnerable to greater exploitation and trafficking.
