The purpose of this guidance, produced on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers, is to provide the Police Service with clear information about investigating child abuse and neglect and safeguarding children. It is structured to follow the pattern of reporting, responding to and investigating child abuse, and also contains advice about the role of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit officers and their supervisors. It looks at managing the police response to investigating child abuse, summarising key definitions, outlining the duty of the police to safeguard children and the ways in which concerns about children come to the attention of the police, and providing guidance for the management and supervision of these investigations. |
