 Over the last decade, tens of thousands of Ukrainian women have been trafficked into prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation. The buying, selling, and abuse of these women earns traffickers, pimps, and brothel owners billions of dollars each year. Although there has been a global outcry against this activity, there has been little success in stopping it. The traffickers continue to operate with impunity because of a transnational political criminal nexus that maintains the flow of women from Ukraine to the sex industries abroad.
