The Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants conducted an official visit
to Turkey from 25–29 June 2012, in which he visited Ankara, Istanbul and Edirne, and held
consultations with Turkish Government officials at central and local levels, civil society
organizations, and migrants themselves.
While recognizing that Turkey has made some important progress in putting in place
a holistic and rights-based legal and policy framework for migration, particularly with the
recent approval of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, the Special
Rapporteur noted that a wide range of challenges are still to be addressed.
With regard to the relationship with the European Union (EU), the Special
Rapporteur is hopeful that the accession negotiation will be an opportunity for the EU and
Turkey to engage on the issue of migration and border management in a way that focuses
on the respect, protection and promotion of the human rights of migrants. |
