The Special Rapporteur visited South Africa from 16 to 26 September 2002. The particular focus of the visit was on the sexual exploitation, and particularly the high incidence of rape, involving very young children and infants. Given the very high rate of HIV/AIDS in South Africa and the connections between the issues related to HIV/AIDS and sexual exploitation, the OHCHR focal point on HIV/AIDS and human rights joined the Special Rapporteur for this visit. The report provides a short summary of the legal framework concerning the protection of the rights of the child in South Africa, and details the Special Rapporteur's findings concerning the situation of rape, sale and trafficking of children, child prostitution and child pornography, with a particular focus upon the related issue of HIV/AIDS. |
