Description:
This paper reviews recent research on the trafficking and smuggling of migrants from China and the evidence concerning the above statements. It also discusses some of the policy measures that have been taken by China and other countries to combat trafficking from China. The paper argues for a more balanced picture of trafficking and of the specific role played by migrants from China. Policies to eliminate trafficking must be incorporated into overall migration policy. A concentration on trafficking, or on any single group being trafficked, is to lose sight of the broader picture and of the causes of trafficking. Migration and trafficking are transnational issues and, as such, international cooperation and the sharing of experience must be key elements in the resolution of problems and the design of appropriate policy.
