Description:
This study indicates that adoption in Nepal does not always take the best interests of the child into consideration. For instance, only four out of every hundred adoptions are domestic adoptions. Many of the children put up for adoption are not orphaned in the true sense of the word but are separated from their families. Siblings, even twins, have been separated. The study finds that the standards of care, protection and services in many child centres do not fully safeguard the human rights of the child. What Nepal needs is adoption legislation that is in line with international standards and safeguards the rights of the child. It should make provision for alternative care for children who have lost one or both parents, and cannot be raised by family members or relatives.
