Description:
 Since the political regime change and the opening up to the outside world in 1991, Albania has emerged as a source of trafficked women and children for the purpose of sexual, begging and labour exploitation. What is more, Albania is geographically positioned in the "perfect position” for the traffickers to be used as origin, transit and destination for the phenomena. The Albanian Government has defined the prevention and the fight against human trafficking as its priority and one of its most important challenges in the human rights and law enforcement area. This research aims to depict a comprehensive and detailed picture on the phenomenon of trafficking in Albania and its causes. It includes an exposè of existing legislation and programs aimed at preventing trafficking as well as protection and penalization issues regarding this phenomenon.
